Cooperation Among Autonomous Agents

Cooperating autonomous agents are becoming increasingly attractive for systems where problem solving and decision making must be decentralized. So far, work in this area has focused either on theoretical aspects or on implementation of ad-hoc specialized applications, but neither has led to significant result in the industrial field. One reason for this is that little of the work done can be used as a starting point in the general case; agent systems are constructed starting from scratch every time. There are, however, several problems that recur, and several properties that are characteristic of almost all autonomous agent systems. This paper presents some of the more important ones, and proposes reusable solutions. Preferred technical area: Autonomous systems, agent architectures.
